Instance is an exploration of process and chance. Inspired by the experimentation of Carl Stone and the warm colors of Japanese kankyō ongaku, Instance is a structural palindrome, a study in sample based Arch Form. Fragments of a Mkwaju Ensemble piece are strung into an eight bar loop, divided into 48 units of equal length, and then assembled over the course of a few minutes. After arriving at the full loop, the piece then disassembles in retrograde until close. To add an element of chance, the audio was recorded to two pieces of tape and replayed simultaneously, resulting in a rigid structure that devolves into an asynchronous, murky bed. A companion to our recent album, Instant Light, this piece similarly explores themes of ephemerality, inimitable actions, and the mutation of memory.

These evocative ambient compositions are dotted with quiet vocals & distant field recordings, making them feel like a cave in a deep woods. Bandcamp New & Notable May 1, 2023
Portland shoegaze that plays, as the best representatives of the genre do, with huge, hollow atmosphere against intimate observations. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 23, 2016
